Interior, Adjustable Height Shelf

Need
On a recent camping trip, I had things I wanted to keep separate and stacked vertically. I bought a small collapsible wire shelf to put in my RUX to accomplish this.

Problem

  • The small shelf wasn’t sized to fill the dimensions of the RUX.
  • The shelf had to be removed to collapse and store the RUX.
  • The shelf wasn’t very stable when carrying the RUX.

Concept
Create an internal shelf using existing attachment points, materials and construction methods. Essentially, the components used for the lid could be repurposed to construct a shelf system. There could be a rigid plastic frame that attaches/hangs from the internal utility rails. Optionally, the straps could be adjustable to set the preferred height of the shelf inside the bag. The bottom panel of the shelf could sit loosely on the shelf frame making it easy to remove. And it could have one more seams to fold back parts of the panel providing access to things below it.

Benefits

  • Aside from more organization options, the shelf frame may provide more rigidity by preventing the corner stays from collapsing as easily.
  • By using flexible straps to attach the shelf frame, it could still allow for the normal function of intentionally collapsing the bag without removing the shelf.
  • The shelf could be stored at the bottom of the bag without the need to remove it entirely.
  • Keep fragile things from being crushed (ex. Doritos), keep wet and dry things separate (ex. snorkel gear and Doritos), and keep frequently accessed items in reach with lesser used items below (ex. snow chains at the bottom, Doritos on top).
